Here are some focus
techniques
that I've learned from the online
'School of Hard Knocks'.
1. Decide
SPECIFICALLY why you're online in the first
place. If
you're there just for entertainment, then about any
old direction will do. If you're there to learn how to
make money, then your focus should be much tighter.
2. Set
and maintain a schedule.
If
you're holding a job and trying to learn how to make
money on the net, then you absolutely cannot afford
the habit of running every link and reading every
screen. Set aside a time for recreational surfing...
perhaps Sunday afternoon, and stick to your schedule. Work
when it is time to work, so you can play when it is
time to play.
3. Identify and choose a FEW
mentors, and let most everything else go on
past. Free advice is one of the basic staples
of the online experience. And much of it is really
solid, but you can only absorb so much... and once you
go past your limit, the whole point is lost. So choose
2, 3 or maybe even 4 websites that are of specific
interest to your online research and let the other
sites go by the wayside. Check and track your chosen
sites regularly for new input or information.
4. Keep a written log of your
travels. There's nothing more
frustrating than to stumble across something really
valuable and useful, but when you want to go back to
it, you're not able to locate it again. I suggest that
you keep a spiral journal on your desk for jotting
down those online answers you find in your personal
quest.
5.Creating
subject-specific folders on your desktop. In order to organize your desktop, you need to create
subject-specific folders that allow you to keep track
of your travels and 'finds' on the net. In
order to create a new folder on your desktop, simply
'right click' your mouse in an open area of
your computer desktop and scroll down the menu to
'New'... rest your mouse cursor on
'New' and a sub-menu will appear. At the
very top is 'Folder', rest your mouse cursor
on "folder" and left click... a 'New
Folder' icon will immediately appear on your
desktop, simply type in the name of your new folder
subject... and you're done. It's that simple.
6. Use
shortcuts to mark your travels. When
you find an interesting site while you are surfing and
you want to come back to it in the future, then create
a desktop shortcut. Shortcuts are created by
'right' clicking on your mouse while you are
in the desired website, just scroll down to
'Create Shortcut' and left click, then
'A shortcut to the current page will be placed on
your desktop' appears, left click and the
shortcut is completed. After your desktop shortcut is
created... you can drag the shortcut into your
subject-specific folder that you have already created.
If you intend
to build a business on the net... then you're going to
have to find a way to protect yourself from
'Information Overload'. FOCUS is
your first line of defense!
