There is a mysterious
type of mental illness
going around these days. It appears to be
some form of temporary insanity. And it only occurs when
certain people hear that weird screaming sound that
their modem makes when hooking them up to the Internet.
It's almost like they go into the Twilight
Zone... and in the grip of one of these strange mental
'seizures', these people undergo a
transformation, then suddenly, all the values and
common-sense that they normally accept and live by, just
seems to evaporate! This phenomenon leads to some really
strange attitudes about building a business... or at
least about building an ONLINE business.
Here
are the most common of these weird notions:
1.
"I shouldn't have to KNOW very much."
Joe is always quick to tell his 16 year old:
"Son, the only way to succeed is to get a good
education." When he says this to his son, he really
means it. But strangely enough, he doesn't seem to
understand that this applies just as much to HIM and the
online business he's trying to build... as it does to
his son.
His actions imply that he believes that it's
reasonable to expect to be able to make big money
online... without first having to take the time to lay a
solid foundation of good business skills and knowledge.
Strange, isn't it??
2.
"I shouldn't have to DO very much."
Joe pretty much takes it for granted that he'll
have to put in 40 hours a week, year after year...until
he's 65. He's
also resigned himself to the fact that about the best he
can expect from all those years of hard work is a roof
over his family's heads and food on the table.
That's just the way life
works. the instant his modem hooks him up to the Magic
Kingdom... Then all of a sudden it's different, and he
seems to be convinced that just an hour or two a day
should be more than enough to build an online empire...
within 2 or 3 months, of course. And he's quick to click
off anyone who tries to tell him otherwise.
Go figure!
3.
"All of my tools should be FREE."
In the real world, Joe goes through life
expecting to pay his own way. He understands the
importance of having the right tools in order to do
quality work. And if necessary, he'll sacrifice in some
other area... in order to have those tools. After all...
that's how he puts food on the table.
But, lookout!
Once he logs on the Internet, those independent
values are suddenly scrapped... he seems to expect that
everything be free... or at least dirt cheap. And he
seems to almost resent being asked to actually spend
money for tools... or help... or anything!
Strange... very
strange indeed!
Sometimes, I think that people would be better
off if it cost thousands of dollars to set up an online
business. In reality, startup is almost free. But as a
result, many amateurs treat the opportunity accordingly.
The REAL 'professional-in-training' treats any
business that he's in as if it cost him $50,000 to
launch... and that he may lose that $50,000 if he
doesn't take care of business.
Out of every 100 people who get involved in
online marketing... 95 lose money and soon quit. Of the
other 5... 3 make a better-than-average living... and 2
become wealthy. They're the professionals.
