The Internet has spawned the era of the
'guru'. An era where most of us are fixated on
finding someone who can mumble a few magic words over us
and instantly save us from our own ignorance.
3-Minute Oats and
Fax Machines...
They introduced us to the concept of
'instant gratification', which we've all
enjoyed. But, the birth of the Internet has taken us a
step further. We no longer just enjoy instant
gratification... we absolutely DEMAND it!
To me, the term 'guru' implies easy
answers and quick fixes, in lieu of study and
application. What most newbies need is a guide... not a
guru. Someone who can show them what they should, and
every bit as important, what they SHOULDN'T invest their
time in.
This ain't
horseshoes!
In this business, CLOSE just doesn't work...
Computers are as dumb as rocks. Otherwise, you
could just talk to them and tell them what to do... but
no, you have to spell it out for them... in EXACT
detail... get one letter in a filename wrong and see
what you get... NOTHING, it just sits there............
If you want your computer to ACTUALLY do work for
you, then you're gonna have to take up the slack and
learn ITS language. That takes time... and besides, it's
work. But your only other option is to figure out how to
entice your guru to leave his villa in Spain and move in
with you. And what do you figure the odds are that he'd
rather live with you in your apartment in Minneapolis,
than in his villa in Spain? Not good... huh? So, you're
only realistic option is YOU.
